Melanie Jean Murcott is a distinguished leader in environmental law and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Environmental Law Association of South Africa. In this capacity, she advocates for environmental justice and robust governance, drawing upon her extensive experience in both legal practice and academia to drive meaningful change. She also holds the position of Associate Professor at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law at the University of Cape Town.

Melanie's legal career began in prominent South African law firms, including Hogan Lovells, where she advanced to the role of Partner. Her practice was characterized by significant litigation and commercial experience, which laid a strong foundation for her transition into academia in 2012.

A prolific researcher and thought leader, Melanie authored the influential book Transformative Environmental Constitutionalism (Brill, 2022), which offers a pioneering perspective on adjudicating environmental disputes amidst an escalating planetary crisis. Her work emphasizes that achieving true justice—social, environmental, and interspecies—requires acknowledging the intrinsic interconnections between human rights and ecological well-being.
